Automatic collection of E-commerce events

To analyze online store conversions, you usually need to set up E-commerce markup: design it, prepare technical specifications, and engage developers. Because of this, many sites don't track purchases and hence lose important analytics.

Auto-collection creates goals for key funnel events automatically, so that you don't need to set up the markup manually. Yandex Metrica detects these events on your site on its own and creates goals with value (revenue) based on them.

What goals auto-collection creates

Yandex Metrica creates two automatic goals:

  • Auto-collection: purchase — tracks completed purchases. This goal is triggered when a user lands on a "Thank you for your order" page or confirms a one-click purchase.
  • Auto-collection: order placed — tracks order placement. This is triggered when a user fills in order details and successfully submits an order. The next step might be payment or immediately the "Thank you for your order" page (for example, if payment on delivery is selected).

Within a single session, each goal is counted once. The total order amount is considered the goal value.

The Auto-collection: order placed goal is useful for stores with online payment, because it will record a conversion event even if a user doesn't return to your site from the payment page.

How it works

The Yandex Metrica code snippet analyzes site visitor actions on your site: button clicks, page addresses, and the contextual environment of elements, classifying key events along the user's path to purchase. The automatic collection is based on an intelligent algorithm that recognizes funnel events by multiple signals and continuously retrains, improving the accuracy and completeness of event recognition. Based on the events detected, Yandex Metrica creates goals with the specified value.

The algorithm takes into account the specifics of popular platforms — separate recognition rules are defined for more than 70 CMS platforms and web modules.

You don't need to design markup: auto-collection is ready to use and requires no changes to your site code.

Auto-collection accuracy

Auto-collection detects purchases more comprehensively than average manual markup, and makes almost no errors. Its operation is continuously tested on a sample of several thousand reference purchases:

  • Completeness. Auto-collection detects 98% of purchases, while manual markup only detects 85.3% of them on average.

  • Accuracy. On average, 97% of auto-collection events record genuine checkout and purchase events.

As a result, auto-collection detects more purchases than manual markup while also maintaining high data accuracy.

How to enable auto-collection

Auto goals are created automatically. You don't need to set up E-commerce or enable the Automatic goals option in the tag settings for them to appear. Goals will be created as soon as Yandex Metrica detects the corresponding events on your site.

Auto-collection and manual E-commerce markup

If you already pass E-commerce data manually, auto-collection doesn't interfere with that. Manual markup remains in priority: when a session has manually entered purchase data, the goal value is taken from this data.

Where to view statistics

To view statistics for auto goals, use standard reports and add goals to your other Yandex Metrica reports.

Auto-collection also enables basic E-commerce analytics, which means you can now view sales trends and order amounts in E-commerce reports.

Restrictions

  • This type of goal can't be used as part of Multi-step goals.
  • Auto goals aren't counted toward the tag's total number of goals.
  • Yandex Metrica records a user reaching the same goal on the same tag no more than once per session.
  • This type of automatic goals can't be deleted, and its name and default revenue can't be changed.
  • If you edit the tag or a goal, all the previously collected information does not change.

Questions and answers

What to choose: Auto-collection: purchase or Auto-collection: order placed?

For most stores, Auto-collection: order placed is a better option. The reason is that it covers all payment methods and records orders even if the user doesn't return from the payment page. Auto-collection: purchase is a better fit if your site doesn't have online payment and all users land on a "Thank you for your purchase" page after placing an order.

What happens if we switch to a different CMS or redesign out site?

Nothing will break! Auto-collection doesn't depend on the site's specific layout, interface, or logic. This is exactly what sets it apart from manual markup.

Are there many false positives among events that manual markup didn't catch?

We compare auto-collection against a reference sample of several thousand sessions with orders and purchases — it captures 98% of orders on a site with an average accuracy of 97%. You can evaluate auto-collection's accuracy for your site by comparing its metrics with manual E-commerce markup in Yandex Metrica reports.

Can I view detailed information about the products in an order?

Item-level detalization will be available in upcoming updates.

Goals in Yandex Metrica work the same way for any sources. Perhaps there aren’t any users who have completed the goal from this source yet.

The recommendations did not help

Please note: Our support team will never initiate a call to you. Do not follow any instructions of people who call you and introduce themselves as the Yandex Metrica support team.

This might happen for the following reasons:

  • The goal condition in Yandex Metrica doesn't cover all the possibilities. For example, the goal is set as going to the order confirmation page, but the site also allows instant checkout without visiting this page.
  • The site user has a browser plugin that blocks the Yandex Metrica tag, so this user isn’t counted.
  • The user has an antivirus system with strict privacy settings.
  • The user has a slow internet connection, so the Yandex Metrica tag didn’t load on the target page.
